Designated Sober Skipper Campaign Presented at the 2016 International Boating and Water Safety Summit

Sea Tow Foundation presented its Designated Skipper campaign and Life Jacket Loaner program at this year’s International Boating and Water Safety Summit. The summit offers: training, education, awareness, meeting, and networking opportunities to people involved in water safety.

Family and friends operating vessels were highlighted in the presentation as an example that we all know someone in one of these age groups. Statistics are from U.S. Coast Guard 2014 Recreation Boating Accident Report:

  • .610 deaths/ 108 attributed to Alcohol use/ 337 people affected had No life jacket on
  • Alcohol leading factor in fatal accidents
  • Most drownings happen in vessels less than 21’
  • $39 million damage to property
